Photo Credit: Deb Hickman Today on the podcast I have a brand new sock pattern to introduce: our 4th design in this year's Handmade Sock Society. I'm also reviewing a few books that I've found really helpful in my journey to stay healthy. Knitting can take a toll on our muscular-skeletal system, so if we want to keep knitting prolifically, it's important to take care of ourselves. Knitting can also be a source of healing and an act of self-care, so I take a look at some books which cover that side of things as well. On today's episode I have a new Shawl Society pattern to introduce, and some good news about my violin exam! I have a short review of a book that I've found helpful when it comes to making progress on my goals. I'm also exploring some habits and ideas that could help me get more done, with a little mid-year review of what's working and what I'd like to do more of. Today on the podcast I'm talking about a subject that some might find a little controversial, but which I find very inspiring and empowering: craftivism. The idea of changing the world for the better in both big and small ways with the power of making is a wonderful thing. I take a look at the #titsoutcollective spearheaded by Countess Ablaze, talk a bit about how discovering craftivism has changed the way I look at my own craft, and take a peek at some of the lovely patterns from the Collective. Today's podcast contains a heartfelt ode to one of my favourite subjects...decluttering. It's a bit of a pet cause for me because of how dramatically it improves my day to day life. Knowing where everything is and having room to breathe is one of the best things I can do for my creativity, and I don't think I'm alone in that! I also have a peek at some patterns that are on my radar as perfect minimalist/capsule wardrobe pieces. There are some lovely WIPs showing up on Instagram already, just check #MaythamShawl and #TheShawlSociety to see what members are up to! On Monday we released the third pattern in The Handmade Sock Society: The Astrantia Socks As gardens burst into frenzied bloom under the strong sunlight of in midsummer, Astrantia is content to sparkle in the shade. She’s not the showiest plant to flower at this time of year, but once you make her acquaintance, her twinkling charm is irresistible. The name Astrantia is drawn from the Latin word for “star” and when you see the masses of spangled blossoms it produces each year, ranging from palest white through pale mauves, warm pinks, and dusky burgundies, that celestial title makes perfect sense. This flower also has a more humble folk name— “Hattie’s Pincushion”—a rather sweet connection to the stitching and making we hold so dear. The Astrantia Socks mark the midway point of this season of The Handmade Sock Society. Our third pattern is a celebration of the uncomplicated beauty to be found tucked away in quiet corners, even when the world is at its loudest and brightest. Written in three sizes, these socks are knit from the top down with a sweet bobble and twisted rib cuff, and are finished with a german short row heel and a wedge toe. Three pretty Astrantia flowers adorn the side of a simple sock: the pattern is mirrored between the pair. Like a Cloud by Joji Locatelli Our first shawl has been released! It is called The Maytham Shawl. Here's a little bit of the description: The Secret Garden is a story about coming alive, and about the power love has to make broken things beautiful again. The flowering of the long-neglected garden and the flourishing of the children are intertwined in every page. The Maytham Shawl is a tribute to the real house that Frances Hodgson Burnett loved, and to the imaginary house, Misselthwaite Manor, which was transformed from a cold, forbidding pile of stones into a home full of warmth and laughter. This is a generous shawl using two colours, in a semicircular shape. The texture and easy lace are inspired by the grandeur of neo gothic architecture, with its soaring arches and columns. The sample for this shawl was knit in La Bien Aimée singles, including the very special new Curious Handmade colourway. There will be a pre-order available on the La Bien Aimée website at 11pm Paris time on May 31st, the day the first shawl pattern comes out, and most of the kits will ship by June 15th. If you don’t want to wait, A Yarn Story still has a limited number of skeins of the Curious Handmade colourway, as well as a stunning stock of La Bien Aimée singles available in the shop and on their website now. If you were on the fence about joining us for this season but would like to jump in, all you have to do is grab your copy of the ebook on Ravelry now. We'd love to have you in the Secret Garden with us!
